A 36-year-old Edmonton man is facing charges of sexual assault, possessing and making child pornography. Police say the offences were allegedly committed against the man's niece, who is now five-years-old.

The man was arrested last week by ALERT's Northern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation unit (ICE), an integrated team made up of Edmonton Police Service and RCMP members.

Officials say a search was executed at a north Edmonton home, where computer equipment and electronic devices were seized.

ICE North began its investigation into the case on May 23rd, after receiving information about pornographic material involving a child that appeared to have originated from Canada. Officials say the information was shared by United States Homeland Security.

Due to a publication ban protecting the victim's identity, the accused cannot be named.

The 36-year-old man is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, possession of child pornography and making child pornography.

The accused remains in custody until his next court appearance on June 12.
