A 50-year-old man has been charged in connection to a series of fires set on the city's south side Saturday.

The blazes all broke out between 105 Street and 106 Street from 67 Avenue to 74 Avenue.

Emergency crews first responded to a dumpster fire just before 3 p.m. in the area of 104 Street and 72 Avenue.

Seven other fires were lit shortly after.

"We probably had four different stations responding to various calls," Cpt. Jeff Vrolyk with Edmonton Fire and Rescue said Saturday.

A least one vehicle, a shed, two dumpsters, a fence and at least one home were targeted.

The arsonist was arrested about 45 minutes after the initial dumpster fire in the area of 106 Street and 75 Avenue.

A motive is not clear at this time and police cannot confirm what substance, if any, was used to start the fires.

Lawrence Cardinal, 50, has been charged with eight counts of arson.

No one was injured.
