Just over a week after they won their seats in the provincial election, nearly 40 new MLAs were put through their paces Tuesday morning.

MLA school is where procedures in the legislature are explained to all of the new members, and 38 new MLAs attended class Tuesday.

Outgoing speaker Ken Kowalski made a presentation at the Legislature as part of the progra, later he spoke to the media – and had some tips for the province's newest representatives.

"You can respect one another; you don't have to dislike one another if you happen to be from a different caucus," Kowalski said. "We've got a responsibility to 3,750,000 people of Alberta. Do it, do it with class."

Rookie MLAs covered subjects such as lessons in the history of Alberta politics, a breakdown of their pay.

The new NDP MLA for Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview said he's grateful for the chance to get used to his new surroundings before the next session begins.

"It's kind of a world of its own, as they mention it's a lot to take in all in one day," NDP MLA Deron Bilous said. "I still keep getting turned around within the building. I think it's great that they're having this to get our feet on the ground before we get started."

"It's just generally, mostly logistics, and with the speaker giving his presentation on the history of this legislature, just what a huge task and what a huge role an MLA plays in the legislature here," Wildrose MLA for Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills Shayne Saskiw said.

New MLAs will be sworn in on May 15.
