Patrons at a popular hotel in Jasper had to be evacuated Tuesday, after a fire broke out in the main lodge.

The General Manager of Jasper Park Lodge told CTV News the fire started at about 2:30 pm, and was contained to the portion of the main lodge around the chimney.

Four fire trucks responded to the blaze, hoses were trained on the roof of the building to put out the flames.

Firefighters from Jasper and the resort's own fire crews dealt with the blaze.

The fire was out in about an hour, but crews remained to douse hotspots – the GM said the Jasper Fire Chief expected to declare the fire completely out before 7 pm.

All 50 guests and 180 staff in the main lodge at the time were evacuated safely.
