Power and road crews were scrambling to deal with a rash of outages and deteriorating conditions Thursday as Mother Nature blanketed the area with heavy, wet snow.

Many trees and power lines were brought down all over Edmonton by the snow.

EPCOR began fielding calls for power outages around 4:00 am. Officials say 26 circuits were affected, cutting power to as many as 30,000 customers. By 10:00 am, EPCOR said all power had been restored.

It wasn't just residential homes without power either, Edmonton Public School Board officials told CTV News fifteen schools were without power Thursday.

Some could use emergency generators, while others had to resort to using windows for light.

"One of the beautiful advantages to some of these older schools is the beautiful natural light that's in place," Cheryl Oxford with Edmonton Public Schools said. "So we're able to have the classrooms without power and there's still quite a bit of light for learning to take place."

Meanwhile, the weather brought an ugly commute for morning drivers, who had to navigate through all that heavy snow. By 7:00am, the City of Edmonton had dispatched 110 pieces of snow clearing equipment.

City officials did not implement a parking ban to clear the streets, but plowing and sanding crews will be ready in case melted snow freezes on the roads overnight.
