It was a day off for one party, but three of the major provincial parties took a break, albeit brief, from the campaign trail Sunday to engage in April Fools day fun.

Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith took a day off from the campaign trail Sunday, her party issued a press release overnight, declaring Smith's plan to pursue a merger with Saskatchewan to form a new province, should her party win.

In the press release, the new province created from the merger would be dubbed ‘Saskberta', and its new capital would be Lloydminister, although it would then be called ‘Regimonton'.

"Alberta and Saskatchewan are both blessed with abundant natural resources, which is clearly an area we can better pursue as a single province," Smith said in the press release, she continues, with a nod to a well-known Arrogant Worms song: "We also have a shared commitment to eliminate pirate activity on the North Saskatchewan River."

Smith also pledged that the first priority of her government would be to introduce a third NHL team to the combined province, which would represent both sides, dubbed the ‘Saskberta Grain Elevators'.

The release ends with a nod to the faux pas involving the party's campaign bus, among other things, saying the party stands for "cuddling small animals, drawing pictures with children, loving cake, and provocative public transport."

The Liberal party sent out an apparent statement by the party's leader, Raj Sherman, speaking out against the PC party's apparent plan to build an overpass over a new runway at the Calgary International Airport, instead of a tunnel underneath it.

In the release, Sherman states: "This is just about the most absurd idea I have ever heard."

The statement goes on to pledge the party plan would include a $54 billion investment over 60 years for Alberta municipalities to invest in green infrastructure projects.

Not to be left out, the New Democratic Party distributed a link to a spoof video, posted on YouTube last Christmas – showing NDP Leader Brian Mason, playing a sergeant tasked with whipping the Wildrose caucus, and Liberal Leader Raj Sherman, into political shape.
