In an appearance in Edmonton Wednesday, NDP Leader Brian Mason spoke about his party's plans to make electricity more affordable for Albertans.

Mason said in the decade since the Conservatives de-regulated power in Alberta, many Albertans have suffered due to rising electricity rates.

"People are having a hard time with their budgeting, having a hard time planning because power rates are so different from month to month," Mason said. "They do go up and down like a roller coaster."

He promised to make the Alberta Utilities Commission independent, while regulating rates which would stabilize prices.

"They forget that Alberta belongs to everyone, not just the power companies that are trying to make high profits from an essential service for Albertans."

Mason's pledge comes after the appointment of an independent committee by the provincial government last week, to review the fluctuating electricity market in Alberta.
