RCMP in Fort McMurray have laid charges against a man in his 50s, in connection to the death of a woman earlier this week.

Police have charged Dale Davidson, 55, of Fort McMurray, with first degree murder.

The charges come after the body of a 49-year-old woman was found in her Thickwood-area home Thursday morning.

It's believed the woman was killed between Wednesday, March 21 and the early morning hours of Thursday.

Police said they don't believe the death was the result of a random attack, as the accused and the victim are believed to have known eachother.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.

Police said the victim's identity will not be released out of respect for the family.

Davidson is in custody, and his first court appearance has been scheduled for March 27.
