The Fraser Institute has listed four Edmonton schools in their top 10 for 2012.

The organization's annual report that grades Alberta schools was released on Sunday.

Windsor Park School tied with Calgary's Webber Academy for top placing.

According to the Fraser Institute marks in language arts and math were in the high 80s or 90s based on achievement tests throughout the province.

"It's the only objective measures of how kids are doing that anyone has access to in the elementary school years. There are no others," Fraser Institute's Peter Cowley explained.

However, not everyone agrees the tests reflect what goes on in the classroom.

"PAT'S are a very narrow sinippet of how kids are doing on a very narrow aspect of curriculum," Education Minster Thomas Lukaszuk told CTV News.

"They hardly are descriptors of how well the school is doing," he said adding he expected to announce a better way to deliver the achievement tests shortly.

In Edmonton the top five schools were Windsor Park, Grandview, Mount Pleasant, Stratford and Westbrook.

One of the lowest ranking schools in the city was Brightview Elementary.

Parents said that was not fair as many families in the area were facing obstacles that may interfere with the kids ability to score well.

"I mean something as simple as whether they eat breakfast the morning before the test things like that," Roberta Valliere told CTV News.

"I know a lot of families around here who don't have a lot right now.

"Some kids learn differently than others," she added.

"I don't think the school should be judged on that."

Cowley said the Institute stood by its assessments.

"Stress is a part of life," he explained.

"If students don't understand what stress is in terms of its importance in life and by importance I mean the frequency with which you get stress and you haven't learned how to deal with it then shame on the education system."
