Federal Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose was in Edmonton Wednesday to make a funding announcement about a mentoring program aimed at young women.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is receiving $199,905 from the Government of Canada for a project that will provide support for young women in their leadership roles.

The organization focuses on the mentoring of young women between the ages of 18 to 30.

Minister Ambrose said the goal of the mentorship project is to give young women skills that will help them in the work force.

"While building leadership skills, the project will also help young women gain valuable experience, support their career development, and contribute to their economic success," Ambrose said in a press release.

Young women who take part in the 18 month program will be encouraged to work for agencies, boards and commissions during and after the project's completion.

This project is an expansion of a project that started in Toronto called ‘Protégé'.
