The RCMP has confirmed the peaceful arrest of a suspect sought in connection with an incident in rural Alberta that left two Mounties wounded and another man dead.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Marianne Ryan confirmed the arrest at a press conference Friday.

"We are extremely relieved that this situation has been resolved without any further harm to our members or the community," Ryan said, telling reporters that 27-year-old Sawyer Clarke Robison was apprehended during a roadside stop in a rural area about 20 kilometres southeast of Killam, Alta.

He was apprehended without incident, Ryan said, noting that Robison was unarmed and co-operative at the time.

When asked to describe the condition of the accused, Ryan said he was, "extremely stressed, apart from that his physical condition was relatively good."

Robison is in custody in an undisclosed location and will appear in court within 24 hours, she added, noting that two others in the car at the time of the arrest will likely not face charges.

Although Robison was initially described as a person of interest in the case, police on Wednesday charged him with two counts of attempted murder. Issuing a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest, the Mounties said he might have fled as far away as Ontario.

"There was some speculation he may have gone further to get away from the scene of the crime, but clearly that didn't happen," CTV reporter Bill Fortier said in an interview from Edmonton Friday.

In her comments to reporters, Ryan was not keen to share details that might affect the police investigation. She did say, however, that investigators "believe that he was near an industrial site off that rural road" where he was ultimately arrested.

When asked whether Robison's family's appeal that he surrender to police had any effect, Ryan considered her words carefully.

"I believe they were instrumental in helping him to come forward," she said, refusing to say whether Robison turned himself in or was caught by chance.

Robison had been last seen driving away from his family's property near the town of Killam, Alta. on Tuesday afternoon, after two Mounties were shot while attempting to execute a firearms-related search warrant.

Four officers had turned up at the property, police say, following up on a domestic violence incident in a nearby town.

The injured constables, Sheldon Shah and Sidney Gaudette, have both undergone surgery and are expected to fully recover from their wounds.

The deceased has been identified as Robison's uncle, Brad Clarke.
