CN Rail crews have been cleaning up after 31 cars derailed near Wainwright Saturday afternoon.

Officials confirm that some of the cars have fallen into the river valley of the Battle River.

"Seventeen of the derailed grain cars came off the bridge and are on the valley below," CN Spokesperson Julie Senecal said.

She explained that two employees were on board but neither were injured in the incident.

Senecal said there was a variety of merchandise on the train but only grain cars were affected.

She added that were no environmental concerns.

However, Battle River bridge was damaged and crews have been working on repairs.

"It's a steel bridge and CN crews are on site to repair the structure and to basically take care of the derailment," Senecal explained.

She said the train line was expected to be closed for an undetermined amount of time.

"It's too early to determine at this time when the line will be reopened to traffic but in the meantime trains are rerouted over our prairie north line."

It is the third derailment in Alberta in the last week.

About 20 cars were involved in a derailment near Hay Lakes on Friday.

On Tuesday a freight train collided with a stationary train near Hinton.
