Dozens of pilot car operators turned out to provide an escort to a fallen colleague at a funeral in Spruce Grove Saturday.

Linda Tremblay, 49, was killed by an alleged impaired driver while she was working on Highway 881 on January 14.

Police said Tremblay was conducting traffic control as part of a wideload vehicle escort.

Family and friends gathered at the Holy Trinity Church for the service and said their goodbyes.

"Her heart was as big as this country," Tremblay's husband, Gaetan said, "and this is what comes of it."

Tremblay's safety jacked and hard hat were carried out in front of her casket while a procession of pilot vehicles escorted the hearse to the cemetery.

"I can't say enough for these people that have come out," Gaetan said.

"We'd have done it for any pilot car operator, anybody out there."

"I know there's a lot that wanted to be here but couldn't be," Tremblay's former employer Ken Clarke said.

"It's pretty scary," Tanis Kucher who has been a pilot driver for eight years told CTV News.

"One of the first things I was out on a load when we heard the news about Linda and one of the first things we all said was, ‘Wow' like it could be any of us."

Friends said Tremblay became a pilot vehicle operator to be close to her husband who drives transport.

"She jumped in the truck and followed me on three loads and she fell in love with it," Gaetan explained.

"She enjoyed being out front. Enjoyed driving. She enjoyed dealing with the people."

The pilot operators said they were hoping to educate people about safety on the roads.

"A flashing yellow light that means slow down," Dawn Wawryk said.

"First and foremost slow down and proceed with caution."

Police have charged Darcy Earl Lemaigre, 36, with charges of impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide a breath sample.
