A man RCMP say was armed with a knife and machete during a confrontation in Onoway Wednesday night was shot and killed by officers.

On Wednesday around 7:30 p.m., Stony Plain RCMP members were called to a domestic disturbance at an apartment building in Onoway.

RCMP say two officers arrived at the apartment building to find a male, later identified by neighbours as 49-year-old Darby Mahon, armed with a knife and machete.

So far investigators won't say whether the man was threatening officers or even if he was holding a weapon at the time. However it was confirmed the officers involved fired numerous shots at the man in question after an altercation that escalated very quickly.

According to Ferlin Aginas, a resident of the apartment building, Mahon was angry with another resident before police were called – Aginas said he'd tried to intervene when Mahon started trying to bust down the door to a basement apartment.

"I tried stopping him, but when you're in a guy's way and he's looking at you with that look in his eye and he's got weapons in his hand, you can't do much," Aginas said.

Aginas told CTV News Mahon was angry at the resident of that suite.

"I heard him calling him a coward," Aginas said. "[He said] ‘Get out here and face me, you hit my daughter'."

Mahon's adult daughter was reportedly also there, and tried to stop him – before the building manager called police.

"Two members attended the scene where they encountered a male with an edged weapon," Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said. "During the incident, that male, [who] was armed, was shot and killed by police."

The man was pronounced dead on scene.

Not long after the incident occurred, investigators from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team were involved in the investigation.

"From the time the 911 call was made police responded almost immediately to the 911 call. Once they arrived on scene it was a matter of minutes before the shooting occurred," said Clifton Purvis, director of ASIRT.

Few other details on the incident were available. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.
