The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta has suspended a local family physician after three patients filed complaints against him.

In a hearing for the CPSA, Edmonton physician Dr. Khaled Smeida was found guilty of sexual misconduct.

The hearing was held after three complaints were lodged against Dr. Smeida from three different patients.

The College said the charges mainly centred on inappropriate behavior in the exam room, and sexual intercourse with a patient.

The hearing found Dr. Smeida failed to maintain an appropriate doctor/patient relationship with at least two patients, and having intercourse with one patient multiple times in 2010.

Aside from his suspension, Dr. Smeida must meet several conditions before he may practice again, including:

  • Complete a behaviour course which he must pay for
  • Only see female patients over the age of 15 years with a chaperone present (who has completed the CPSA's chaperone training course)
  • Pay for the cost of the investigation into the complaints, totaling $21,011.22
  • Must participate in the CPSA's program for boundary violators for at least five years

His suspension will begin on January 1, and will end on December 31, 2012.
