Days after a fire left a man dead and destroyed a rural home in central Alberta; investigators have determined the blaze was not suspicious.

The investigation began after emergency crews from the Sylvan Lake, and Red Deer County fire departments and Lakeside EMS were called to the rural home south-west of Sylvan Lake before 5 p.m. on Monday, December 5.

When fire crews arrived, the home was engulfed in flames.

A short time later, the lone resident of the home was found inside.

The 66-year-old man was suffering from serious burns, and immediately taken by ground ambulance to the Red Deer Regional Hospital – where he was then airlifted by STARS to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

He died after 4 a.m. the next day.

Witnesses stated they heard explosions in the home as it burned, but investigators have found the noises were sounds normally heard during a house fire.

Investigators said the fire started in the living room of the home.
