One week after a four-month-old baby was rushed to hospital – but died hours later, her biological father has been charged with the infant's death.

Police have said they believe four-month-old Zaria McCall was inside her family home in Red Deer when she was injured, and one of her parents took her to Red Deer Regional Hospital.

The baby's father, Julian Thomson, 21, has been charged with second-degree murder.

"What a second-degree murder charge would be is a murder that is not planned or pre-meditated, it's a spontaneous action," Cpl. Kathe Deheer with the Red Deer City RCMP said.

On November 25th, McCall was brought in to the Red Deer Regional Hospital, suffering from life-threatening head injuries – RCMP were called in two hours later.

She was taken to the Stollery Children's Hospital by Stars Air Ambulance a short time after she arrived.

Early the next morning, she succumbed to her injuries, and RCMP began investigating the case as a suspicious death.

Thomson appeared in a Red Deer courtroom Friday via closed-circuit television.

The case was put over until next Wednesday.
