Blowing snow and bitter temperatures made for a difficult commute Thursday in and around the Capital Region.

Snow plows have now been deployed to various areas of the city as a winter storm warning was issued.

Between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow will cover the ground Thursday. A seasonal parking ban was issued by the city Thursday afternoon for area neighbourhoods to allow plows to come through.

The parking ban is new this year, which part of changes by city officials after the near-historic snowfall the city saw last winter.

In order to speed up plowing of residential streets, seasonal parking ban signs have been put up along collector routes. And once a ban is implemented, drivers have eight hours to move their vehicles or they may be towed.

Vehicles parked on roads where seasonal parking ban signs are posted must be removed by 7 a.m. on Friday. The parking ban will be in effect until further notice is issued by the city.

The city is also adding 20 new plows to maintain a level snow pack of five centimetres.

"And we have the ability to bring in another 50 operators, so we can have 100 vehicles on the road in a very short time period," said Bob Dunford, director of roadway maintenance.

The city plans to use local and social media to spread the word when parking bans are in place.
