Edmonton's minor hockey community and a family are in mourning after a teen succumbed to his injuries after getting hit by a puck during a hockey game.

The South Side Athletic Club posted a message on its website Sunday night that 16-year-old Kyle Fundytus died of his injuries.

Fundytus was playing with the Don Wheaton Midget AA team at the Clareview Arena when he was hit in the neck by a puck.

According to team officials, Fundytus was rushed to hospital after he suffered cardiac arrest and was given emergency surgery.

One minor hockey coach said he was shocked by the news.

"Kids are in sports to have fun and develop friendships," Greg Edwards told CTV News, "Not to be injured."

Those who played with Fundytus have united for support.

"This morning the team and coaching staff, family and parents all gathered at our club house to pay their respects," Terrence Scott from the Southside Athletic Club said.

Fundytus' family declined to speak to CTV News and asked for privacy at this time.
