A diesel shortage in Alberta means higher costs for truckers and likely higher prices at stores.

There is currently a diesel shortage in Western Canada, which is being blamed on a scale back on production at Edmonton's Suncor.

Suncor says it's because hydrogen sulphide is running low and the company is rationing its supply of diesel.

It's now costing truck drivers nearly $1.18 cents a litre to fill up.

"It's about five cents higher, which isn't good," said driver Deepak Mehrotra. "About three, four times a month I fill up or more, so it means another three, $400, $500 expenditure that I didn't need to spend."

Suncor says it is working to correct the problem but it expects it could be another few weeks before the issue is resolved.
