A section of a north-east neighbourhood has been taped off and the homicide unit is investigating, after shots rang out late Thursday night – and one man succumbed to gunshot wounds in hospital.

Police were called at about midnight Thursday after shots were heard in the area of 132 Avenue and 69 Street.

When police arrived on the scene, a 22-year-old male was lying on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds.

"As a result of some sort of an altercation, one gentleman was found on the ground," Inspector Brian Nowlan said on the scene. "[He was] transported to hospital where he has since passed away."

Police are speaking to several witnesses, but still have no clear suspect description at this time.

"All we have right now is that we are looking for a black male," Lisa Sobchyshyn with the Edmonton Police Service said. "So obviously we are looking for a lot more information."

Investigators are asking anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers.

Police said an autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, October 17.
