A day after police confirmed human remains found near Innisfail are those of Dana Jane Turner, RCMP have admitted to making a mistake, and delaying her missing person case.

Police told CTV News that early in the case, an RCMP officer sent the file to another law enforcement agency – under the belief that they would lead the investigation.

The officer sent the file to the Edmonton Police Service.

"I can tell you that the Fort Saskatchewan detachment made an incorrect conclusion that the Edmonton Police Service would be the lead agency in this investigation," Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said. "Specifically in this missing person investigation, and that was because the missing person was seen in the City of Edmonton,

"That assumption was not correct, and this was confirmed when there was further discussion with the Edmonton Police Service."

The incident caused a delay in the case.

RCMP are still handling the investigation as a suspicious death, her remains were found near Innisfail last weekend.
