A tsunami warning has been called off for parts of Alaska's Aleutian Islands after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck in the waters about 45 kilometres southwest of Amukta Island, Alaska at about 6:55 a.m. ET.

A tsunami warning was promptly issued and cancelled about an hour later.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that "no destructive tsunami" was recorded after the quake and no danger exists for Alaska, British Columbia, or West Coast states.
