A A 5.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Virginia was felt as far away as New York, and even parts of Eastern Canada.

The quake startled many, including some locals on vacation.

"Everyone starts looking around, and I could see some hanging tiles from the ceiling just start shaking," said University of Alberta student Jessica Boer, who is vacationing in Baltimore.

"You could just hear a rumble, and then we're wondering what's going on."

Trevor Borst was talking to a friend who lives 30 minutes north of Washington at the time of the quake.

"Things are falling off the walls, pictures, and then then about 10 seconds later it just stops. Literally it felt like someone took my house and just started shaking it," said Trevor's friend, Jay Hurst.

U.S. authorities say injuries have been reported, but no immediate reports of deaths. Infrastructure damage was reportedly minimal. Several buildings were evacuated including the Pentagon. It's being called the most powerful quake to hit the region.
