For dozens of kids fighting brave battles, today was a once-in-a-lifetime treat: a local NHL champion showed up in person to give them a good look at one of the most famous trophies in the world.

Johnny Boychuk, a defenceman with the Boston Bruins, had 12 hours with Stanley cup, and spent a good portion of his time with it at the Stollery Children's Hospital.

Once there, the hockey player met with several parents and patients, handing out cards and signing autographs.

For kids who were too sick to get out of bed, Boychuk brought the Cup to them.

"It's nice to see him smiling so big," said Soula McInnis of her son Jacob, who's already survived 78 surgeries. "He's a pretty tough kid, but little things like this just mean the world."

Boychuk says he was more than happy to share his moment of glory.

"It's every kid's dream. I'm just glad it's back in Edmonton."

The NHL player will spend the rest of Friday showing off the Stanley Cup to family and friends, before the trophy leaves the city at midnight.
