After word a strip club was approved by the city to take over an Old Strathcona nightclub, CTV News has learned those plans appear to have changed.

The application to operate the former Rehab Rock Room as an exotic lounge was made by The X Bar, an existing North Side strip club in the Yellowhead Inn.

Tuesday afternoon, City Councillor Ben Henderson told CTV News that the owners of X Bar now say the Old Strathcona location will be run as a nightclub, not a strip club. Henderson said the owners would have to apply for building permits to renovate the building as a strip club, and that has not happened.

The councillor is not sure if there were other reasons why the change was made.

"I'd like to think its public pressure, I'd like to think it's our pressure," Henderson said. "To me it's just a good news story at this point that it's not going ahead."

"Clearly a lot of people were upset about the idea of putting it in there."

"Personally, I'm happy about that," Paul Foisy said.

"[A strip club] just doesn't fit in the general atmosphere of the neighbourhood," Dan Palamar said.

CTV News has also received a statement from the building's owner, stating a strip club will not open on the property.

The operators of The X Bar were not available for comment Tuesday, and did not return calls from CTV News for clarification.
