The airport improvement fee is set to increase by $5, which will bring the total to $25. This applies to passengers who fly out of the Edmonton International Airport.

The increase will affect starting in January. Two months ago during a tour of the new facility, it was announced there would be no increases, but now that's all changed.

The Edmonton Airports president and CEO says passenger numbers haven't reached the levels expected when the airport expansion was planned, creating a shortfall in fee revenue.

The $1-billion airport expansion is geared to attract more flights.

"When we get major airline partner coming to us and saying 'we're scared you're not going to be able to accommodate the growth,'" said Reg Milley, president and CEO of Edmonton Airports.

News of the increase already has Edmonton travellers talking.

"I don't like additional fees added to my ticket, however it's nice to have a nice airport to travel out of," said Anita.

Some passengers say they're aware they have no choice but to pay for all the fees when booking a ticket.

Flying is expensive and I'm not sure that's going to change," said Gary.

The expansions are set to be complete by December, and open in January.

The fee increase will create $15 million in revenue annually.
