A suspicious death on the city's north-end has now been ruled a homicide, investigators say. This is Edmonton's 30th homicide of the year.

Police were called to the area of 45 St. and 157 Ave. around 10:30 p.m. Sunday to find a man in his 20's suffering from injuries.

"And when they arrived on scene, obviously this individual required some medical attention," said Edmonton police spokesperson Lisa Sobchyshyn.

One witness said the man suffered from a wound to the abdomen. He later died in hospital.

Police say the medical examiner has determined the man died as a result of a gunshot wound. The victim, who police say was known to them, has been identified as 26-year-old Michael Wayne Tunnicliffe.

Neighbours say the man was not wearing any shoes or socks. It's not clear where he came from or how he got to the area.

Residents say he was on his cellphone and appeared to be injured. He told residents he was on his way home.

People in the area realized his injuries were serious when he collapsed.

He was struggling to sit up and I kept trying to convince him to lay down and relax until EMS got here," said resident John Heykints.

Neighbours say the man was able to get up and walk to seek medical attention.

"The odd thing is he got up himself and he walked himself to the ambulance," said resident Lesli Parker.

Neighbours are anxious for answers on the bizarre scene they encountered late Sunday. Many say they are concerned about why the man was killed and how he got to their quiet neighbourhood.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything unusual in that area. They are asked to contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or police at 780-423-4567.
