The excessive rain over the past month or so has caused a two to three week delay on a majority of the city's road construction projects.

"Although we always plan for weather contingencies, we could not have anticipated the excessive rainfall we have experienced in June and July. Of the last 43 days, we saw 33 days of rain, and that has meant that our crews have been hampered as they work to complete a record number of projects," said the city's transportation GM Bob Boutilier.

Boutilier says while crews are working to make up for lost time by working extra hours, the scheduled completion of many projects depends on dry weather.

Officials say the wet weather has had the greatest impact on projects requiring excavation, paving and concrete installations. Road widening and neighbourhood locations where excavation is a major aspect of the project require not only water removal but also numerous days to dry.

Scona Road/99 Street is two weeks behind schedule, but officials believe it is still on track to be completed in November of 2011.

The 23 Avenue/Gateway Boulevard Interchange is two weeks behind schedule, with the anticipated opening of all roads by mid-September of this year.

The 118 Avenue Streetscaping project is originally scheduled for completion in 2012, but some work may have to be carried forward.

Lessard Road is three weeks behind, with the opening date revised to August 5th.

The Quesnell Bridge/Whitemud Drive is two weeks behind schedule with road and bridge work set to be complete by end of August.

All neighbourhood renewal projects are two to three weeks behind schedule. The city says completion of those areas scheduled to be done in 2011 is dependant upon an extended dry spell.

Access closures to and from Stony Plain Road and Anthony Henday Drive were delayed, but officials now say will take effect this Saturday.

The access closures are necessary in order to complete construction of the Stony Plain Road Interchange.

Once the closures take effect, traffic will only be able to travel north and south along Anthony Henday Drive, and east and west along Stony Plain Road. And all turns at the intersection will be closed.

The bridge deck above Stony Plain Road and 100th Ave. still needs asphalt.
