Police have laid charges in connection with the death of a two-year-old boy in Medicine Hat.

Officers say paramedics were called to a Medicine Hat home Tuesday afternoon on a report that a toddler needed medical help.

RCMP say the two-year-old boy was taken to hospital where he later died.

T-Jaye Heller, 31, is facing charges of first-degree murder, sexual assault, sexual interference, and interference with a dead body.

He appeared in court Thursday morning.

Family members say toddler and his mother moved to Medicine Hat from Edmonton about a month ago.

The accused is the mother's boyfriend, who was reportedly taking care of the boy when the call for help was made.

Heller was taken into custody at the scene for breaching a condition of probation in an unrelated matter.

A publication ban has been issued on the name of the child.

Heller will appear in court on July 7th. He remains in police custody.
