A new poll suggests that voting-age Canadians believe law and order initiatives are the most important priorities for the Conservative government.

Nanos Research and the Institute for Research on Public Policy recently asked more than 1,200 Canadians to identify the most important of the five long-term priorities listed on Prime Minister Stephen Harper's website.

Thirty-three per cent chose "cracking down on gun, gang and drug crime," which was the most popular answer in the survey.

Twenty-six per cent said "strengthening Canada's economic union" was the most important Conservative priority, while 22 per cent picked "improving food and product safety regulations."

Only eight per cent of those surveyed said "asserting our sovereignty in the Arctic" was the most important priority.

"Rebuilding the Canadian Armed Forces" was selected as the most important priority by only seven per cent of respondents.

Four per cent of those surveyed said they were unsure of which option was the most important.

The poll is considered accurate to within 2.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
