Clean-up efforts are underway Monday after a pipeline explosion and an oil leak occurred near Swan Hills.

Officials say the blast happened Sunday at a Pengrowth Energy facility, about 23 kilometres southwest of Swan Hills.

The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) reports less than 500 barrels of light, sweet crude oil flowed into Judy Creek and onto local ground areas. The spill has been contained and the pipeline has been shut down.

The company has placed booms in Judy Creek. And officials say vacuum trucks and collection tanks are on site.

A spokesperson for ERCB says Pengrowth Energy managed to start the cleanup quickly because a group of oil companies already had equipment in the area.

"There was a spill coop located pretty close to the spill site," said Darin Barter with the ERCB." They essentially drive it on and unpack it."

The cause of the blast is unknown at this point. The ERCB says there is no direct impact to residents in the area. The nearest home is 30 kilometres away.
