Homicide section detectives are investigating a suspicious death north of downtown early Sunday morning.

Just after midnight, officers were called to 107 Street and 107 Avenue after a fight was reported.

Officers found a man, possibly in his early 20s, lying on the ground in the area. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Police have not revealed the victim's name, but family and friends have confirmed the identity of the man killed early Sunday morning is 22-year-old Bruce Dumais.

Few details of Sunday morning's events have been confirmed by police, but Dumais' friend Travis Lewis told CTV News his friend was attacked by three people.

"He [was] jumped by three guys," Lewis said. "[He was] stabbed once. Instant death."

The mother of Dumais two young children remembers a happy man, and a great father.

"He loved his children a lot," Chelsie Janvier said over the phone. "He would always be doing things with them out in the park."

Janvier told CTV News police told her Dumais was stabbed three times. She said Dumais was walking to the store when he was attacked.

Teams of detectives from all sections in the city were called in to help in the investigation.

If this death is confirmed as a homicide, it will raise this year's count to 26.

Five of Edmonton's 25 confirmed homicides this year happened near 107 Avenue.

The victim's identity has not been released at this time. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
