Spruce Grove and Stony Plain RCMP have arrested two men for their involvement in the disappearance and death of Martin Belanger.

Christopher Elder is charged with first degree murder, and Dean Deford is charged with accessory to murder.

The arrests follow a lengthy investigation into the disappearance of Martin Belanger on May 17, 2009. He was reported missing after leaving his home in Spruce Grove, and never returning.

Less than two months later, his truck was found partially burned in Tomahawk, Alberta.

Belanger's disappearance has been treated as a suspicious, and the investigation led RCMP to find his remains on a property south west of Stony Plain.

Its news Belanger's mother never wanted to hear, she spoke to CTV News over the phone from her home in Trois-Pistoles, Quebec on Saturday.

"In the end, we find our son is dead," Ginette Belanger said. "It's difficult, we still had hope."

Belanger told CTV News she was very close to her son, he called home at least twice a week. The last time she heard from Martin was Mother's Day of 2009, and he disappeared one week later.

She said he was expecting a baby when he went missing; his daughter was born after his disappearance.

"I know Martin would have been proud of his daughter. Martin would have really, really loved being a dad to this child."

His daughter lives with her mother in Edmonton.

Belanger is waiting to hear more details of her son's death from RCMP officers. They're expected to visit her home to explain to the family what has happened.

Officials have not released the cause of death or where the remains were found, as the investigation continues.

Deford and Elder will appear in Stony Plain Court on June 15 and 22, respectively.
