Alberta's Somali Community is identifying Edmonton's 25th homicide victim of the year as Abdi Ali.

A man in his 30's was fatally shot east of downtown last Friday.

A tent was eventually set up in the area shielding the body from the public's view in the area of 86 St. and 106 A Ave.

"He's been a long-time resident of Edmonton," said Mahamad Accord, president of Edmonton's Alberta Somali Community Centre.

The local Somali Community Centre says Ali is the 13th person in less than three years to fall victim to homicide.

Accord is concerned that the latest homicide will never be solved, arguing only one suspect has been charged and convicted in the last 13 homicides his community has seen.

"What is unique to us is our killers go free."

He believes Edmonton police could be doing more when it comes to handling crimes involving Somali-Canadians.

"The Edmonton police department is not working for us. It is not treating us equally."

Police insist while these homicides have been challenging, there is no prejudice involved.

"It's unfortunate that we haven't had more luck. To be honest with you, in some of the investigations involving members of the Somali community," said Insp. Stewart Callioux with the Edmonton Police Service. "We wanna put every bad guy in jail, that's responsible for any homicide in the city... no matter what their race, colour or creed."

Officers have asked the public to bring forward any tips related to this recent homicide. But Accord says people won't feel comfortable until police recruit more from within the community.

"Hire more people who know the culture and the language, so that they can get more information."

Police say it is something on they are working.

"I am aware that we are making some progress, that there is some interest, in fact, possibly for the next recruit class," said Callioux.

Within two weeks, members of the local Somali community expect to file an official complaint with the Edmonton Police Commission. Plans are in place to then hold a meeting June 26th at the Alberta Avenue Community League.
