The sudden death of a 59-year-old inmate at the Edmonton Remand Centre has been ruled a homicide. A 25-year-old inmate is now facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the case.

Police were called to the Remand around 5 a.m. Thursday by staff who reported the sudden death of the male.

Police say early in the investigation, homicide detectives was called to the scene due to the nature of the event. Investigators then determined the death to be a homicide.

Another inmate, 25-year-old Justin Caldwell Somers, has been charged with second degree murder.

The name of the deceased has not been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning.
