After a second straight day searching for a missing soldier who disappeared while out for a run in the North Saskatchewan River Valley, his wife and other concerned family members are desperate for answers.

Edmonton police called off the official search for 25-year-old Richard Curnow Friday afternoon, after an exhaustive effort that involved dozens of military personnel, as well as fire and rescue officials.

Curnow was running with eight other soldiers near Emily Murphy Park yesterday morning when he disappeared.

"This is not PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), this is not a soldier AWOL, this is not an emotional breakdown," said Richard's wife, Justine MacKenzie-Curnow. "This is a mystery and it's looking more and more like a tragedy."

"I just feel like something terrible happened to him," she added.

Another soldier taking part in the run said Curnow vanished during a 700-metre stretch between runners.

Curnow's wife describes him as level-headed and a responsible father.

It has been reported the couple was estranged but Friday morning Justine would only say she had a strong relationship with her husband and that they were both committed to raising their three-year-old daughter.

"Please know that he has a family that loves him so much," said MacKenzie-Curnow.

Curnow served two tours in Afghanistan and was involved in a squad that dismantled roadside bombs.

While 75 military personnel combed the river valley for any sign of the soldier, his loved ones handed out flyers.

A water search was also conducted by fire and rescue officials.

"Ultimately what we have to do is be able to put our hands on our hearts and say that we've done everything humanly possible to find Master Corporal Kernow," said one soldier, involved in the intensive search. "It's both for him and for us right? Because we don't leave guys behind."

Edmonton police also combed backyards and sheds in the area while military officers went back over the 10-kilometre route the soldiers were running at the time of Curnow's disappearance.

Police do not consider the disappearance as suspicious. The Master Corporal's vehicle, with personal items still inside, was found parked at the south end of Hawrelak Park.

Curnow is originally from Carstairs, Alta. and served two tours in Afghanistan with the Canadian military between 2006 and 2010. He is married with a three-year-old daughter.

Richard Curnow is described as: 5'11", 208 lbs., brown hair and eyes, with an athletic build,
