A 26-year-old woman from Kamloops, B.C. is facing impaired driving charges in connection to a Monday night crash that killed a 23-year-old woman.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at 178 Street and 76th Avenue in the Callingwood area. Police say 26-year-old Stephanie Beckley was travelling northbound in her Jeep on 178 Street when she allegedly drove through a yellow light and struck the passenger side of a Honda Civic, which was turning left off of 178 Street at 76 Avenue.

The 23-year-old female passenger of the Civic was taken to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. Police say she later succumbed to her injuries.

Officers arrested Beckley at the scene of the crash for impaired driving.

"She was taken to West Division and she went through the Breathalyzer twice, both times she failed it quite poorly, both times it was twice over the legal limit," said Edmonton police spokesperson Clair Seyler.

Witnesses have told police the Jeep was being driven erratically just before the crash.

Beckley and four passengers in the jeep were not injured. The victim's name has not been released.

The male driver of the Civic was also taken to hospital. Police say his injuries were not that serious.

Beckley is charged with impaired driving causing death.
