A 56-year-old man from Strathcona County was shot and killed by police Sunday evening after officers say he challenged them with a firearm.

His death came around 5 p.m., following an eight-hour standoff with authorities. Officials say the victim had barricaded himself inside a home, located in the area of Range Road 223 and Township Road 510, and was threatening to harm himself.

A number of tactical units had set up a large perimeter around the area in the hours before the standoff came to an end, with police keeping contact with the man over the phone. It's believed no one else was inside the residence.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates injuries or deaths that involve police officers, has been called in to review the case.
