Effective immediately, the city and Edmonton police have cancelled the distribution and prosecution of all outstanding Intersection Safety Camera, also known as Speed on Green, speeding tickets.

Police say out of 245,000 violations detected on the cameras last year, 26 could not be properly verified. Officials say while most violations were stopped at the quality control and screening stage, one was accidentally mailed out.

This goes back to a case where the reliability of the cameras came into question.

"They had a case with a specified speed violation that they were being asked to prosecute and the evidence they had before them didn't make their case believable," said Deputy Chief Daryl da Costa with the Edmonton Police Service.

Police want citizens to know that if they have a Speed on Green ticket in their possession, they should not pay it.

"For the people with tickets that haven't been paid we're telling them that they don't have to pay them, they'll be cancelled," said da Costa.

Tickets that combine an intersection speeding violation with a red light violation are also being cancelled. Police want people to know the cancellation does not involve tickets issued for a red light infraction, or photo radar tickets taken outside of intersection areas.

These tickets are still valid, and must be paid or dealt with in court.

Police say once the technical glitch is resolved, the speed enforcement function will be reactivated.

Those who have already paid speeding tickets on the intersection safety cameras will have to wait for some answers. The deputy police chief says they hope to get some answers sometime next week.

Citizens who want more information on whether their ticket is an ISC speeding ticket can check the city website at www.edmonton.ca or the Edmonton Police Service website at www.edmontonpolice.ca for an illustration of an ISC ticket.
