Popular American retail chain Target is set to hit the Canadian market. The company aims to set up 100 to 150 stores in Canada by 2014.

Target paid the now American-owned Hudson's Bay Company $1.83 billion to acquire up to 220 Zellers stores across Canada.

The company says 70 per cent of Canadians already recognize the brand

"And 10 per cent are already shopping in Target stores in the United States," said Target spokesperson Amy Reilly.

Some shoppers feel our country already has enough American-influenced shops, but one University of Alberta professor argues more competition will guarantee some better buys.

"A few nationalists might sort of wave the flag and say, 'hey, I'm not happy about this but they're overwhelmingly outnumbered," said Adam Finn.

Shoppers like Sandra Mercer agree.

"I'm in favour. Competition is great," she said.

Target says it will have hired up to 20,000 people once its stores are operational in Canada.
