A 37-year-old man was arrested Friday afternoon after he allegedly entered the home of his ex-wife and shot her common law husband three times.

Officials say they received a call from a woman around 2:15 p.m., reporting the shooting near Leduc's Aspen Crescent, located in the Suntree Area. CTV News is told she was able to escape the residence along with her baby.

According to RCMP the victim, a 25-year-old, was also able to get out of the home and was eventually taken to the U of A Hospital by STARS for emergency surgery. His injuries are described as life-threatening.

Neighbours say the man was shot in the chest, shoulder and arm.

Some homes in the area were evacuated, and residents say police told them to get down on the floor and to stay away from windows.

The event is a lot for Trish Sury to process.

"I just feel really bad because they're a young couple obviously going through some kind of tragedy," she said.

Officials say the suspect stayed inside the home after the shooting and RCMP were able to maintain a telephone conversation until officers arrived on scene. While an Emergency Response Team was requested, the specialists were told to stand down because the man was arrested without incident.

Police are not releasing the name of the accused at this time.

"There are various charges that he would be facing," said Cst. Jodi Heidinger.

"We're still determining what those charges would be."
