The media has been given permission to name the man accused of killing his sons earlier in the week. In a document released to media Thursday, the Acting Director under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act consents to media publishing the name of the "individual accused in the December 20, 2010 homicide of two children."

Jason Bruce Cardinal, 31, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his two young sons.

Anyone related to the children could not be identified because the children received support from Children's Services, but the province now says it has determined that media outlets can publish the name of the accused.

"I provide this consent as I am satisfied, based on the circumstances of this matter, that publication of the name of the accused may be necessary for the proper administration of justice," wrote the Acting Director under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act Robert Hopkins.

Police laid charges against the man after his six-year-old and three-year-old were found dead inside a townhouse in the Abbottsfield area late Sunday.

Autopsies on the boys were performed Tuesday but a cause of death hasn't been released. Police were originally dispatched to the townhouse after receiving a call from the Child and Family Services crisis unit.

An ambulance was also called to treat non-life-threatening injuries to the 31-year-old father. As of Wednesday, the man had remained in an Edmonton hospital. He was scheduled to appear in court a day earlier but missed the appearance.

Cardinal is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 5th.
