Edmonton police are investigating a double homicide after two small children were found dead in a residence on the city's north side. One man is in police custody, but criminal charges haven't been laid at this point.
Just before midnight Sunday, police received a call to assist the Child and Family Services crisis unit.
Once inside, officers found the bodies of two little boys.
An ambulance was called to treat non-life-threatening injuries to a 31-year-old adult male. The male was eventually placed into police custody.
The name of the suspect and any pending charges will be released after the autopsy. Police are not saying if he is related to the children. Anyone related to the children cannot be identified because the children received support from Children's Services, but still lived with their mother.
"The children, as I said were residing with their mom, and this is just a very tragic situation," said the Minister of Children and Youth Services Yvonne Fritz. "Family violence you know leads to very tragic situations and it's just shocking and sad."
It's believed the children were on a weekend visitation to their father's home when someone took their lives. The whereabouts of the mother is not known at this time.
Other moms in the area were shocked to hear of the deaths.
"It's hard, it's scary, it's Christmas. You've got kids of your own, I feel very sad for their families," said Brenda Thurston.
The autopsies have yet to be scheduled. Neighbours told CTV News the two children are said to be of kindergarten and elementary school age. Police are not saying how the children died.
