For the second year in a row, people in need received a dose of TLC from volunteers, with makeup artists, hairdressers and photographers working to give them a moment in the spotlight.

The local chapter of Help-Portrait, an international movement, was on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at various Edmonton locations.

Celebrity Photographer Jeremy Cowart founded the initiative in Nashville three years ago, hoping to provide struggling individuals with a memento of their best selves. Photographers involved with Help-Portrait do not keep the pictures they take, but rather print them off and give them to their subjects.

"We're trying to give back in a way that we can," said Javier Salazar, Edmonton's event organizer.

"These people can't afford a professional photographer usually… We have people even crying while getting their portrait done. They love it – they want to show [their photograph] to everybody."

By early afternoon, Salazar says hundreds of people in the Capital Region had already had their picture taken by one of 30 volunteer photographers.

Across the world, it's estimated 5,000 people in 55 countries give their time to the cause.
