A massive explosion has destroyed two homes in Ponoka.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene on 39th Street around 5 p.m. to find one home completely engulfed in flames.

Flames then spread to a neighbouring property.

"Upon arrival on the scene we saw that the garage had exploded, and fully involved, and one wall from the garage had fallen over onto the neighbour's house and ignited it as well," said Ponoka Fire Chief Ted Dillion.

Both homes were destroyed by fire. No one was inside the home that exploded, but fire officials said one woman was inside the neighbouring home when it went up in flames. She escaped the fire uninjured.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Fire officials said all they know at this point is that the explosion happened at the front of the house.

"All I'll say is it was in the garage," said Dillion.

A damage estimate has not been released.
