RCMP have charged a 24-year-old man with first-degree murder after he allegedly ran over a group of patrons outside a bar in the town of Olds Alberta, killing one person and injuring three others.

Jeffrey Kevin Leinen, of Calgary, is accused in the death of 18-year-old Nicholas Baier, who was struck by a vehicle around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

CTV News is told the accused was kicked out of the bar because he was too intoxicated and may have been involved in a fight inside the premises.

Law officials say this isn't the first time Leinen has faced criminal charges.

"I can tell you that the individual is well-known to police in various areas," said Sgt. Patrick Webb in a phone interview from High Prairie.

"He has a record of some significance and that will all be coming to court when it eventually gets there."

On Friday RCMP told media they believed the hit and run was "deliberate" but could not confirm if it was a targeted attack.

They also said officers chased the suspect after he sped away from the scene but soon called off the pursuit because of heavy fog.

According to officials, the arrest was made after the driver crashed and rolled his truck about three blocks away from the bar.

Olds College confirms Baier was a second-year student in the agricultural management program and said the teenager was originally from Altario, a hamlet in east-central Alberta.

The 19-year-old who was also hit and seriously injured was released from hospital Friday afternoon. The other two people who were run over did not require significant medical attention.

Education officials say extra grievance counsellors are being brought in to help students who are struggling to come to terms with what happened.

"Students are shocked. It's a really small town," said Olds College Student Body President Brianna Maryon.

"You'd never hear about something like this happening."

On top of the murder count, Leinen is also facing several other charges related to impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at the Calgary Provincial Court on Monday November 1st, 2010.
