Fisher-Price is recalling 11 million items, including trikes and toy cars, in the United States and Canada over safety concerns.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that two of the recalled products caused injuries.

The Fisher Price Trikes and Tough Trikes toddler tricycles, of which seven million are being recalled, can cause "serious injury, including genital bleeding" if a child lands "on the protruding plastic ignition key," a statement announcing the recall said.

At least 10 injuries were involved with the trikes, some which feature popular characters such as Dora the Explorer and Barbie, six requiring medical attention.

Also being recalled are almost three million inflatable balls, 1.1 million high chairs and 120,000 car-ramp sets.

The balls and cars have associated choking risks and the high chairs have a laceration risk.

There were 14 reports of problems with the high chairs, including one incident in Canada. Seven incidents required stitches and there was one tooth injury. About 125,000 chairs were sold in Canada.

CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said companies need to build more safety into their products before they can be bought by consumers. But she also offered praise to Fisher-Price for "taking the right steps by agreeing to these recalls and offering consumers free repairs or replacement."

Caroline Connell, the editor-in-chief of Today's Parent magazine, urged parents to heed the recall.

"It's definitely scary for parents to get this kind of news, and you think ‘I'm buying these things because I assume they're safe to give to my children," she told CTV News Channel.

However, "the actual risk to any given kid is extremely low," she said. "We're seeing a voluntary recall in the interest of caution, and safety of kids. Certainly as parents we can all agree that that's a good thing."

Besides the trikes, the other Fisher-Price recalls include:

  • 2.8 million Baby Playzone Crawl & Cruise Playground toys, Baby Playzone Crawl & Slide Arcade toys, Baby Gymtastics Play Wall toys, Ocean Wonders Kick & Crawl Aquarium toys, 1-2-3 Tetherball toys and Bat & Score Goal toys. There were 46 reports of valves breaking off the inflatable balls on the U.S. and eight in Canada. The valves pose a choking hazard.
  • 1.1 million Healthy Care, Easy Clean and Close to Me high chairs
  • About 100,000 Fisher-Price Little People Wheelies Stand 'n Play Rampway toys
