Following a five-month investigation, the RCMP have charged a 28-year-old woman in connection with a fatal crash near Daysland, Alta.

Charlotte Liselotte Verkerk, 28, has been charged with two counts of impaired driving causing death, three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, two counts of driving over .08 causing death, three counts of driving over .08 causing bodily harm, two counts of dangerous driving causing death, and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

On April 3rd, 47-year-old Shelly Patterson of Daysland was killed when her Ford Escape was struck head-on by a GMC Safari van west of Daysland on Highway 13.

The woman died at the scene. Patterson was a mother of four and a soon-to-be grandmother.

The woman's husband, Jim Patterson, was injured in the crash and taken to hospital. The couple was just about to celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary.

Two of the couple's children, Leeann Zellweger and Jamie Patterson, told CTV News it was very difficult coming to grips with their mother's sudden death.

A 29-year-old passenger in the van, Erin Huggan of Edmonton, was airlifted to hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

Verkerk's first court appearance is set for Tuesday at the Killam Provincial Court house.
