The charges against a woman accused in the death of a 19-month-old girl have been upgraded to manslaughter. Medicine Hat police say their investigation has shown that the child's injuries are alleged to have occurred while receiving care at a Medicine Hat registered day home.

Police say the child was airlifted to the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary in critical condition, and last Wednesday morning, died as a result of her injuries.

The 24-year-old female day home provider was initially facing charges of aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessities of life.

The operation of the day home has since been suspended. Investigators aren't certain how many children attended the day home, but say the little girl was the only child there at the time.

The province confirmed the day home worker was licensed through the Children's Corner Daycare Centre and Day Home Agency, which operates several homes in Medicine Hat.

The name of the accused has not been released. She is currently in police custody and will attend a formal bail hearing in Medicine Hat on Tuesday.
